To join the Saint James Lodge and Freemasonry, in principle all you have to do is ask and it does not matter if you do not already know anyone who is a Freemason, you will be welcomed in. What’s more, there are only few prerequisites to joining Freemasonry.
Whilst Freemasonry is a non-religious organisation, members of Freemasonry do have one significant thing in common, we all have a belief in a supreme being. It does not matter what faith you hold but a belief in a supreme being is fundamental to joining Freemasonry.
There are a couple of other prerequisites relating to a minimum age and that you must be of ‘good character’, i.e., no serious criminal convictions, of good standing within your community, etc..
If you are interested, use the form on the right to get in touch and we will be pleased to contact you via your preferred route, to discuss joining the Saint James Lodge and Freemasonry, in more detail.
What’s the Process for Joining?
The process requires you to make a written application to the Lodge Secretary explaining who you are, how old you are, what your employment is and who you work for, or what your employment status is. It helps in your letter to explain about your social circumstance i.e., are you single or married or with a partner? do you have any children? how your immediate family feels about you joining Freemasonry, and any other useful background information.
If you do not have a proposer and seconder at the time of application, the Lodge Secretary will arrange to meet with you, along with other Lodge members who may become your proposer and seconder.
Once your application letter is received along with a letter from your proposer and seconder, the Lodge Committee with discuss your application at a monthly committee meeting and if in agreement, you will then be invited to attend and interview which is more of a casual meeting between yourself, your proposer and seconder and a few of the Lodge’s Past Masters; an informal ‘chat’ where we can get to know you a bit more and then hopefully, recommend to the committee that your application should be proposed at the next Lodge meeting.
At the Lodge meeting following the proposition, there is a ballot of the members and if accepted, you should be able to join the Saint James Lodge shortly after this.
The process may take a few months however, it will be fully explained to you before and during the process.
